Today in Cubs History: April 29

Down 5-0 with two outs in the ninth, the Cubs find a way to win. Larry McWilliams is tossing a one hitteer against the Cubs, the lone hit an Ivan DeJesus single, and he takes a comfortable five run lead into the ninth at Atlanta. Dave Kingman and Steve Ontiveros single leading off the inning, but McWilliams retires Jerry Martin and pinch-hitter Gene Clines to put himself one out away from a complete game shutout. When he walks Ted Sizemore to load the bases, Gene Garbeer is called in to close the door. Tim Blackwell singles in two runs, pinch-hitter Larry Biittner singles to make it 5-3, and Bobby Murcer hits a three-run homer to put the cubs on top 6-5. Bruce Sutter puts two on in the bottom of the inning, but works out if it for the save.

The Reds come to town to play the Cubs, but forget their uniforms and have to borrow the uniforms from the Chicago White Sox!

1913 Wearing the uniforms of the White Sox, the Reds lose to the Cubs, 7-2. The team forgot to pack uniforms and had to don those of their opponents' crosstown rivals.

April 29, 1898: First baseman Frank Chance debuts in 16-2 win vs. Louisville.

1987 In an 8-4 win over Giants, Cubs' outfielder Andre Dawson provides much of the offense as he hits for the cycle.

2005 In a match up of 300-game winners, Greg Maddux bests Roger Clemens as the Cubs edge the Astros at Minute Maid Park, 3-2. The last such a showdown occurred in 1987 when Angels’ hurler Don Sutton of California defeated Twins southpaw Steve Carlton.
