Wood finally speaks to media....

None of this has been Kerry's fault (except maybe the fall in the hot tub). He has had legit injuries, and I although I am just as frustrated and exhausted with all of his injuries, I have to hand it to him for not just throwing in the towel and saying "to hell with it". I think it doesn't help that Prior seems to go down the same time he does and they will forever be linked when it comes to the injury department, as if they are one pitcher with just whole bunch of problems.

He finally spoke to the media, and I do admire his optimism....

Quote:
MESA, Ariz. -- Kerry Wood played catch from 50-feet off flat ground on Wednesday and is preparing himself for the long road back to normalcy.

"This whole spring has been kind of bittersweet," Wood said. "I came into camp I felt great. I did a weird thing with the fall (in the hot tub). That didn't deter me at all. I was fine and I came back throwing the ball great.

"Then the triceps (injury) kind of came out of nowhere, and I fixed that and was getting back into it. It's tricky, these things. It's kind of a pain in the butt, but you can't give up now."

Wood incurred shoulder discomfort in his last outing on Sunday and will be placed on the disabled list by Opening Day. He has no timeline for his return, but it's unlikely to be before the end of April, judging from previous rehab stints.

"I've put timelines (on injuries) in the past, and it doesn't really benefit me at all," he said. "Everybody wants to know, and the team wants to know when I might be able to get back in action.

"To me, this (shoulder) has to feel great to me. It was feeling great this spring, and that didn't last the whole time, but I don't feel bad… It's getting better, and let's keep working on it."

Wood said he felt good mentally, though the frustration of the latest setback has changed his once sunny demeanor this spring.

"I've been through more than this," he said. " It (stinks), no doubt about it. But I'm not discouraged. Each morning it's getting better and better."

Wood vowed to return to the Cubs in good health, no matter how long it takes.

"I've put too much time and work into this to risk anything happening, so I've got to get it right," he said.

I am skeptical that he will return in good health. I think he needs surgery.

We have to still wonder whether the injury problems are due to Don Baylor, Dusty Baker, Larry Rothchild or himself doing something wrong. Sometimes these pitchers need to try to play within themselves instead of trying to be the next Roger Clemons or Nolan Ryan.

Wood, The Cubs organization, and us fans will be better off if he would just have the surgery....come back in a year or 2 and rejoin the rotation. In the meantime i need some new jersy's for all i have are Wood & Prior.

Well put. According to my friends Grandpa ( A Diehard Cards Fan) he says that it's all Larry Rothchild's fault and that he ruined Wood and Prior

Well, EVERYONE needs to get Prior and Wood OFF your mind. Move on and think of other things. We have the staff to NOT need them. You don't think that the cubs didn't think about this when they signed players? Just forget about them and quit worrying.

Dusty likes to use pitchers until their arm falls off, and Larry was under Dusty. The thing about Wood, it his mechanics are terrible, and he was bound to hurt himself. Pitching instructors should have tried to help him with his delivery. The "It's not broken why fix it" approach doesn't work with poor mechanics. Eventually it brakes...

Unfortunately Kerry the only way for you to be pain free from that shoulder is to get that rotator cuff repaired.
