Winter League Cubs

I like to keep up with the guys playing in winter leagues in Arizona and the Caribbean. I collected a few stats to pass on, in case any one else is interested (but not interested enough to look it up. ) Probably missed some, but here are a bunch. (All as of yesterday.)

Aguilas de Mexicali, Mexican League

Jeff Samardzija: 5 GS, 2-0, 2.25, 8 BB/22K

Brian Schlitter: 12.2 IP, 1-0, 4.97, 4 SV, 6 BB/8 K

Matt Camp: .356/.418/.483 in 20 G, 14 R, 13 RBI, 6 2B

Brad Snyder: .333/.437/.528 in 19 G, 12 R, 18 RBI, 3 HR, 5 2B

Navegentes de Magallenes- Venezuelan League

Andres Blanco: .294/.338/.485 in 16 G, 13 R, 14 RBI, 6 2B, 5 SB

J.R. Mathes: 5 GS, 1-2, 5.40, 6 BB/10 K

Larry Suarez: 2 BB/2 K in 1.2 IP, 0.00

Robert Hernandez: Hasn't pitched

Robinson Chirinos: .441/.427/.824 in 14 G, 8 R, 11 RBI

Luis Rivas: .800/.833/1.400 in 5 AB, 4 RBI, 3 2B

Mesa Solar Sox, Arizona Fall League

Andrew Cashner: 3 GS, 1-2, 3.72, 3 BB/7 K, .182 AVG against

John Gaub: 6.0 IP, 1-1, 12.00, 1 BB/10 K

Blake Parker: 7.0 IP, 1-1, 3.86, 2 SV, 5 BB/6 K

Welington Castillo: .357/.438/.571 in 14 AB, 2 RBI, 1 HR

Josh Vitters: .333/.364/.405 in 10 G, 3 RBI, 3 R

And, best for last! The kid leads the AFL in batting...
Starlin Castro: .417/.462/.458 in 14 G, 10 R, 5 RBI, 3 SB
(Today he was 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB)

*Those are good numbers for Jeff S!

*Matt Camp was my son's favorite player when he was with the Chiefs... and he was distraught the day the usher at the Chiefs game told my son that Matt had been promoted to Tenn! Glad to see he is still working hard in the system!

* More good numbers for Andres Blanco... I do see him very valuable to our infield if not next season, but in the very near future! He just needs to keep those offensive numbers up there!

Aww I'm just sort of vaguely familiar with Matt Camp's name as a former Valley Leaguer. It's always cool to see those guys do well, but especially if they happen to be in the Cubs' system.

Additional note: Andrew Cashner, Josh Vitters, Blake Parker and Starlin Castro were all selected to play in the AFL's "Rising Stars" game. The game is this Saturday, and will supposedly be broadcast on the MLB Network.

Michael Brenly was added to the Mesa roster and hit a two-run homer yesterday.

Minor league FA - cubs need to resign them and roster them if they are out of options:
Brad Snyder - cubs need to resign him and add him to 25-man (out of options)
Blanco - minor league FA/25-man (like Snyder)
Mathes - not really that good, just minor league filler
Rivas - minor league FA

Major Rule V eligible cubs:
John Gaub - almost a sureshot to be rostered
Blake Parker - ditto, was drafted as a catcher and only been pitching three years (like Marmol and Wells)
Wellington Castillo - a sureshot unless he's traded
Matt Camp - not spectacular numbers, but he's got some versatility similar to Chone Figgins (CF,SS,3b, 2b)
Chirinos - had a breakout year last year at A+/AA, but he's already 24 and 4th/5th on depth chart for catcher
Rafeal Dolis - 21 y/o with really good stuff
