Cubs Negotiating with Calero

The Cubs are negotiating with Kiko Calero. He posted a 1.95 ERA in 60 innings (67 games) with Florida last season, while closing out 15 games. He also posted a 0.00 ERA in the 2006 Postseason with Oakland.

The more I think about this, and look at his career numbers, the more I think this could be a good signing.

Would the Cubs put him as the closer if signed?

Isn't Calero coming off TJS or something?? Wouldn't be bad for a year, I guess.

Marmol should stay as the closer, if anything, to keep Lou from abusing him and doing stupid crap like pitching him in blowouts.

Marmol is one of those guys the Cubs should explore trading at some point or another over the next year (along with Fontenot, Theriot, Baker and Marshall).

I read Calero would be either a normal reliever, or set-up if Guzman falters or gets injured.

I'm less worried about Guzman failing than Grabow.

rumors are if the Cubs get a RHP like Calero or Frasor (Toronto) they may trade Guzman since they have a plethora of RH's in the pen

He's cheap, under team control for a number of years, and a former top prospect. He's definitely worth something.

Although the rumors had him going to Colorado for Spilbourghs. If Gomes signs that might not happen.

Lou made it very clear at the convention that Marmol would be the closer... no discussion, no "tryouts"... he has earned the spot. Hendry has been trying to find that 7th-8th inning guy that can get the game to Marmol
