Thats just baseball- saying

Its been replied to me numerous times and others have received it as well. It is a phrase that kind of seems like it has no meaning and really pisses you off sometimes. The truth is it does have a meaning. Baseball is full of unexplained things everyday. Things are seen during a game that have never been seen before. Unlike other sports where everything is pretty much noticeable, baseball has hidden aspects that only a certain few see. I mean where else can the best team in the league actually lose over 60 times in a year, sometimes even over 70 or 80 games. As a hitter you can go into a game and go 0-4 with 4 linedrives that were caught or something like Jerry Hairston Jr in the series vs the Reds before the break where he was robbed 4 times in one game. I mean he didnt do anything wrong- he crushed 3 balls that game right at people and then blooped one to Cf that Edmonds dove for and caught. Then you have the other guy that bounces one off the plate and drops another in no mans land down the RF line. In both cases he didnt mean to do that but he has 2 hits to show for it. Both of these times the P executed his pitch and the hitter got lucky, whereas Hairston got pitchers mistakes and hammered them and the P got lucky. THATS JUST BASEBALL

When I think about the last 100 years, that's the refrain that keeps me sane... it's just baseball.

Weak argument and i still hate the phrase...

To me, it just makes me think the person using this phrase is too lazy to offer up a valid argument to someone else's point.

Its not a weak argument I can come up with tons of examples. I agreed with you at first , but then I started thinking about it. Take Tejadas last AB last night. If he takes the pitch that he hits the double on - Soto never moves his mitt and catches the ball- Howry put it exactly where he was suppose to- in turn he executed it perfectly and got burned. I too think its a stupid saying but what else can you call it.

With all of this being said about luck- talent and skill usually steps to the forefront in the regular season- meaning the most talented team will win its division. Now for the playoffs, I think its a crapshoot and has a lot to do with moves by the manager and matchups. You brought up Marmol choking last year in the playoffs. Was it Marmol or was it Lou that choked? The only team that had really gotten to Marmol all yr was the DBACKS, so I put the blame mostly on Marmol- but Lou should have never taken Z out of the first game.

Yeah and Dusty should have took out Prior in Game 6??? I agree Lou should have not taken out Z in game 1 but what would have happened if he didn't and Z sucked it up in game 4 because his arm was tired then what would you have done??

If his arm was tired then you go with someone else game 4- but you have to get there first. As far as Prior/ Dusty- I would have left him in too. In 2003 we didnt have Wood or Marmol, we had Borowski. I think you have to ride your horses.

This is what makes having 4 legit starters HUGE this season and why we have expectations come playoff time.

Zambrano, Dempster and Harden would be my starters and Lilly would work out of the pen. I expect the starters to go eight innings in a close game. if Lou pulls a starter in the 6th inning of a close game i will go insane.

(and lets not discuss 2003, it still hurts...

Baseball is a game of failure. How many sports can say you are successful when you attain something at 30%? Only baseball.

Skill & luck both play a huge roll in this game. There are many unexplained things in baseball. It is a very humble game. A broken bat bloop for a double on one AB & a line drive rocket to the warning track caught by the OF'er for an out on another one. It is just baseball. The result of the game isn't always controllable. This is something the average fan & ones with the 16 game, once a week football mentallity, have a hard time understanding or comprehending. Some fans just allow their emotions to cloud reality of the true whole picture of a full MLB schedule & overreact to one stretch of games or one game or play.

All Good teams & good players go through several bad stretches during the marathon of a 162 game schedule. When fans overreact to one of these stretches,I just kind of laugh of their ignorance & true lack of knowledge of this game. Fact: The Cubs have the best record, best OBP,most runs scored & best run differential in the NL. They are a very good team. These 1st four games of the 2nd half doesn't change that.

GO CUBS!
