Arbitration hearings start next week!!!!

Quote:
A large portion of Chicago's sports attention is on the Super Bowl-bound Bears. But you can be assured that every Cubs fan in town (and probably the country) wants to find out how much the free-spending organization ends up paying right-handed starter Carlos Zambrano, who is seeking a salary-arbitration record $15.5 million, nearly $4 million more than the NL club offered through the third-party process.

New Cubs teammate Alfonso Soriano currently holds the record for highest salary landed through arbitration -- $10 million as a "loser" last season. He had requested $12 million from the Washington Nationals.

Zambrano could, according to the Chicago Tribune, be looking for a contract comparable to the seven-year, $126 million Barry Zito recently signed with the San Francisco Giants.

General manager Jim Hendry, who has spent more than $300 million this offseason in an effort to make the Cubs a championship-caliber team in '07 and beyond, told the Tribune that he would not comment on negotiations, which are in the preliminary stages.

Also, Barry Praver, who is handling Zambrano's negotiations along with his partner, Scott Shapiro, said in an e-mail to the newspaper, that money has not been discussed.

"We spent a couple of hours discussing Carlos' future with the Cubs," Praver said. "I would describe the discussions as more philosophical than substantive. As far as where they will lead, I am not going to handicap the outcome."

The Cubs, who have avoided salary arbitration hearings since 1993, also are having ongoing negotiations with starting pitcher Mark Prior.

The injury-plagued Prior requested a $3.875 million salary through arbitration while the Cubs countered with a $3.4 offer. With such a small gap, it would appear that a compromise could be reached.

Is anyone else getting concerned that it is going down to the wire here with Big Z? Jim has never had to go to arbitration with a player in his tenure with the Cubs, WHY is it taking so long with a no-brainer like Big Z????

I heard something along the same line, but I think it was like Soriano's contract, where he gets a private suite (hotel room) for all road games. Boy, Henrdry is probably kicking himself for not getting this done before Zito signed for such big bucks and inflated the market value!

Yeah, keep the faith in ol' Jimbo. He hasn't let us down so far this offseason.

Doug Davis signed a 3 year 22 million????? WHAT???? Miguel Cabrera wants 7.72 million . Who would you rather have??? Davis sucks, he's a true "One hit wonder". Davis's old teammate Chris Capuano got a 1 year deal at 3.2 Million and he is 5 times better.

Yeah, it seems like Capuano has our number every time we face him. Pretty filthy.
