This is the first of a four-game set between the first-place Cubs and the second-place Brewers. The Cubs send to the mound Ted Lilly (10-6, 4.49) up against Milwaukee's CC (no periods, please) Sabathia (10-8, 3.30 overall, 4-0 as a Brewer).

Line-ups will be posted soon.

Some interesting stats...

Welcome to Wrigley North!

NORTHERN EXPOSURE: The Chicago Cubs make their first 90-mile trek north to Miller Park in nearly 14 months to take on the Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago’s lone series in this brief four-game road trip … the Cubs and Brewers last played in Milwaukee June 4-6 last season, when the Cubs took two of three games … the teams have since played four series at Wrigley Field, including a pair of sets in 2008.
The Cubs are now four games into a stretch that features 13 of 17 games at Wrigley Field through August 10, this series being the lone exception.

Chicago tonight begins a stretch that features 16 of 22 games against National League Central opponents through August 21, the lone exception being a six-game trip through Atlanta and Florida August 12-17 … during this 22-game run the Cubs will meet up with all five divisional foes.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Cubs yesterday regained sole possession of first place in the National League Central, a spot the Cubs have held every day for the last nine weeks except for yesterday … the Cubs have had sole possession or been in a tie for first place for the last 11-plus weeks (78 days) starting May 11.

Nevertheless, the National League Central has experienced a four-game swing since the All-Star Break … the Cubs, who led the third-place Brewers by five-games at the Break, now possess just the one-game edge heading into this week’s four-game set.

ROCKY ROAD: The Cubs, owners of the best home record in the National League, take their 22-30 road record into this week’s four-game set.

Chicago’s 39-14 mark at home this season is the club’s best start in Wrigley Field history … the Cubs first played in Wrigley in 1916.
After starting the season 1-6-1 in their first eight road series through the end of May, the Cubs are 3-4-2 in their last nine series away from home starting June 2.
The Cubs have played 53 games at Wrigley this season and tonight play their 53rd game on the road … here is a comparison of the Cubs at home and on the road in 2008.

HOME 2008 CUBS ROAD

39-14 (.736) Record 22-30 (.423)
.303 (544-for-1798) Batting Average .253 (472-for-1862)
327 Runs Scored 222
6.2 Runs/Game 4.3
74 Home Runs 46
.384 On-Base Percentage .325
.491 Slugging Percentage .393
3.69 (199 ER/486.0 IP) Team ERA 4.05 (207 ER/460.1 IP)

DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL: Chicago has entered the seventh inning one run up or down in four of their last five contests and has been ahead or behind by a single run in six of their 10 games since the All-Star Break.

The Cubs are 48-4 when entering the seventh inning with a lead this season, but three of those losses have come since the Break, including their last two setbacks.
Including twice last weekend against the Marlins, the Cubs have played 32 one-run games this season, posting a 15-17 record in those contests … the Cubs have seen 54 games this year decided by two runs or less, representing 51 percent of their schedule … the Cubs are 25-29 in those games.

THE SKINNY ON JULY: The Cubs are 11-11 in July with four games remaining … the club has enjoyed a winning record in its first three months this season, going 17-10 in March/April, 18-11 in May and 15-12 in June.

The club has a 3.80 ERA this month (83 ER/196.2 IP) that ranks fourth in the N.L. and seventh in the majors … conversely, Chicago has hit just .254 this month (179-for-718) – that’s 10th in the N.L. and tied for 20th in the majors.

FAIRLY CUT AND DRY: Since July 6, the Cubs have scored five or more runs in eight of their nine victories, and seven or more runs in six of those wins … by the same token, Chicago has scored two or fewer runs in each of its last seven losses since July 13.

This season, Chicago is hitting .315 with 7.0 runs per game in their 61 victories, compared to a .223 batting average and 2.7 runs per game in their 44 losses:

2008 Season Avg. R (R/G) HR (HR/G) OBP SLG BB (BB/G)
61 Victories .315 (682-for-2165) 430 (7.0) 87 (1.4) .394 .512 268 (4.4)
44 Losses .223 (334-for-1495) 119 (2.7) 33 (0.8) .295 .339 145 (3.3)

FOR STARTERS:
In the team’s last 18 games dating to July 4, Cubs starting pitchers have allowed one or no runs in 11 of those contests, compiling a 2.65 ERA (35 ER/119.0 IP) while holding opponents to a .207 batting average.

Cubs starters have pitched into the sixth inning in 12 of their last 13 starts … they’ve pitched into the seventh in six of the club’s last 11 games and in nine of their last 16.

CUBS VS. MILWAUKEE
The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers play their first series at Miller Park in nearly 14 months this week, one of Chicago’s two trips to Wisconsin this season … the clubs also close out the season with a three-game set here September 26-28.
The clubs have already played two sets at Wrigley this season (March 31-April 3 and April 29-May 1), with the Brewers winning two of three games each time … the clubs play one more three-game set at Wrigley September 16-18.

2008 Overall: .................................................. 2-4
At Wrigley Field: ..........................................2-4
At Miller Park: ..............................................0-0
2007 Overall: .................................................. 9-6

All-Time Since 1997: ..................................81-79
At Wrigley Field: ......................................43-42
At Miller Park (since 2001): ......................31-26

WALKS, WALKS AND MORE WALKS
The Cubs have drawn 413 walks this season, tops in the majors (the Mets have 411) … Chicago has already surpassed its entire walks total from the 2006 campaign (395).

THAT’S A RELIEF
Chicago’s bullpen leads the majors having stranded 79.3-percent of inherited runners this season (130-of-164) … Tampa Bay is second, having stranded 113-of-145 (77.9-percent).

The Cubs' lead-off man (on WGN radio) is sponsored by Benny's Beverage Depot. If Alfonso Soriano gets on base by way of a hit, Benny's will donate $100 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Matt Sinatro has been fined and suspended for two games, so Ivan DeJesus is at first base coaching box. Sabathia's fastball is high. Second pitch, fly ball, deep to left center, it's off the wall, Soriano's in his HR trot! He hustles into second with a double, but he thought it was gone.

Johnson steps in. He fouls off the first pitch to the screen, a high fastball. Pop up by Johnson, foul ground, Fielder is there for the catch, one gone.
