Cubs talking to the agent of Rich Aurilia.

Dave Kaplan mentioned on Friday night that the Cubs are talking to the agent for Rich Aurilia. Apparently the Cubs are interested in signing the veteran to back-up first base and third base.

Old News. The Cubs & Rich Aurilla have been mentioned together at the beginning of the off-season.

We already have 2 extra bench players. Dont forget, Piniella likes having 7 bullpen arms and 5 bench guys. Here is what the bench currently looks like

Pie, Gallaway, Cedeno, Bako/Hill/Blanco (likely to resign Bako but any of the three could be here), Hoffpauir, Fontenot/Miles (one will be starting), Johnson

Two those guys will have to move

If we sign Aurillia add another name to the list. Right now I am guessing Pie and Cedeno. If we sign Aurillia Hoffpauir is likely out as well

I don't think Blanco will be back, the Cubs have have Hill, signed Bako, and also signed another AAA catcher (can't remember his name).

I would have preferred Aurilia over Miles since he can play 3b and has more power, but having both of them is stupid.

The Cubs have signed back up catcher Paul Bako to a one year, 500,000 dollar deal. Bako will replace Henry Blanco as the teams back up catcher, saving the Cubs close to one million dollars. Bako hit .217 with 6 HR in 99 games for the Reds last season, and threw out 22-of-55 base stealers. Bako is a former Cub and is familiar with a couple of Cubs pitchers, but he has played for four teams in the NL Central, so he could help from a scouting standpoint. One problem I have with this deal is how much Soto, the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year, commented on how much Henry Blanco helped him on and off the field last season. Soto still has a lot to learn, and it's too bad Blanco won't be there to help. Hopefully it doesn't affect him.
When it comes to back up catchers though, Bako is one of the best.
