The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier for its June 18, 2006, Sunday edition had a big article about the fact Iowa is the only state in the union that has summer baseball and softball for high school. Nearly every other state has baseball in the spring (with one or two states that don't have baseball as a high school-sanctioned sport) while about half of the other states have softball in the spring and half in the fall.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (boys) and Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union officials said they are not anticipating a change from summer to spring because they don't feel that Iowa high school sports should cowtow to the colleges. So, unfortunately, Iowa high school baseball and softball players have a hard time playing in front of college and pro scouts, since most of them operate during the academic year (especially college). It also limits the camps baseball and softball players can attend and Amercian Legion baseball is virtually non-existant.

Since the baseball amateur draft is in early June, an aspiring baseball player in an Iowa high school would have to have a very good career through his junior year to even make an impact on scouts in time for the draft. Jeff Clement, from Marshalltown, had the national high school record for career home runs (over four years, 9-12) and the state record (for five years, 8-12), but didn't make enough of a splash to be drafted out of high school. He did go to USC and eventually got drafted after three years there.

You can read about the controversy here.

Yeah, I like watching baseball during the summer though.

At our high school, We won the State Championship 3A title in 97 or 98.
We have had a couple guys go to the minors, and only 1 player go pro. He has jumped to alot of places, and I don't think he is with a team right now. He might be over in japan, not sure.
