DeRosa likely headed to the DL
The Cubs are expected to call-up infielder Mike Fontenot from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday to take the place of Mark DeRosa, who suffered a finger injury while playing first base during Monday night's game at Shea Stadium.
Fontenot, who was hitting .364 at Iowa with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 35 games, will play second base when Ryan Theriot plays at short. The left-handed hitting Fontenot, acquired in the Sammy Sosa trade in February of '05, has a .401 on-base percentage at Iowa.
DeRosa, who was subbing for Lee at first, stayed in the game, but was pinch-hit for by Daryle Ward the following inning. DeRosa had an MRI on his right hand Tuesday.
There was no immediate word on the extent of DeRosa's injury, though he's likely to be placed on the 15-day disabled list. He had only three career games at first base before Monday's start, but was in the lineup against left-hander Tom Glavine to give the Cubs more right-handed hitting.
Wow, those are good numbers and I hope they can carry over to the big leagues! This will also give Lou the opportunity to play The Riot everyday!
