I was wondering that as well, Bock.... also, this is not the first time he has used marmol in a non-save outing this year. So, regardless of the score, if the Cubs are in the lead we are going to see Marmol?

The exact reason why I question moving Z to the pen; Lou's questionable bullpen management to begin with.
You know how I feel about Lou , so take into consideration all of the bias and predisposed mistrust I have of Lou's motivations.

Lou does not want to work at his job. It will take effort and he would actually have to get off the bench and stand at the rail to watch the reliever pitch , then evaluate his performance. He doesn't want to deal with that crap. It is much easier just to toss out Marmol , who he has already seen and let him do his job.

You and I are on the same page about Z to the pen being motivated by Lou's lack luster attention to management. That is why fourteen games in he wants to make such a big move. If it works he will be able to phone it in the rest of the year , 8th Big Z , 9th Marmol .

The Lou of Nasty Boy fame died a years before he ever came to the Cubs.

I know

I understand why he threw the B lineup out there since Suppan was pitching (lol).

He did this with Marmol alot the last two years. I guess maybe he has a regular throwing schedule for Marmol so that he doesn't 'lose it' and go into bouts of lack of control, that's the only excuse I have, other than maybe he was thinking about having to throw Z 2 or more innings today with Lilly back (ok having a starter in the pen would actually make sense for today).

I noticed something about Lou's use of Marmol. He pitched him on these days: April 8 - 10 - 12 - 14 - 16 - 18 - 21 - 23 - 24. Pretty much a pattern there until April 18 - 21. it appears he tried to get back to his every-other-day routine April 21 - 23 but then he sent him out on the 24th. Confusing.

And he's clearly on a 25 pitch limit.

Eh, Kern... give those opinions! Use that ignore button, it does wonders sometimes!

What I thought was interesting is last week how so many of the writers and sports shows hosts were making fun of Lou and this decision... knocking it...talking about how insane the move is.

now, i'm hearing how the bullpen is so much better with Z there, how Lou can be considered a genius if this works...

crazy game of baseball, I tell ya!

Pinch-hitting for the person with the best OBP on the team whose handled the pitching staff excellently the past week in a game likely to go to Extras.

brilliant managing there, Skipper. That was probably the worst managing move I've heard of in a long, long time.

This move burned him in the Astros series.

I assume you are talking about Hill for Soto- I too was very upset with that move. As far as Z in the pen, he is not throwing as well as Demps , Wells and Silva right now. He looked better tonight, but shaky vs the Brewers. God I miss Guzman. I think this is going to be a tough series. Washington is much improved I think. They battled hard all night

You should have expected it. Lou makes all of these decisions by a book he carries in his head. Left - right match ups , he will ignore streaks , history and anything happening in the present situation and always go by the book.

It has drove me nuts for the last couple years.

I still think Z will be traded, however I think it is a brilliant move by Lou and has nothing whatsoever to do with laziness, listening to Boers and Bernstien are we?

You had no one that could get the job done in the bull pen and couldn't get anyone out. You have a surplus at the starter position and Z was the oddman out, Whats so lazy about that?
It could just be that Lou saved the Cubs season with this move
