The Cubs, owners of the second-best record in baseball, tonight play the second game of a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field after dropping last night’s contest, 10-7 … following this series, Chicago embarks on a six-game, two-city trip through St. Louis (May 2-4) and Cincinnati (May 5-7) … Chicago went 2-3 on their recent five-game trip to Colorado (1-1) and Washington (1-2).
The Cubs are in the seventh game (2-4) of a stretch that sees them play 11 of 14 games on the road … the team started the campaign with 14 of their first 20 games at Wrigley Field.

Chicago follows this night game with a day game vs. Milwaukee tomorrow (1:20 p.m.) … tomorrow will mark the club’s fourth day game following a night game in the last 10 days.

Cubs hitters have drawn five or more walks in four straight games for the first time since a four-game stretch May 6-9, 2004 … the last time Chicago hitters drew at least five free passes in five straight contests was during a six-game run, August 31-September 4, 2002.

The Cubs have drawn 121 walks this month, the most since taking 129 walks in Sept./Oct. of 1985.
Chicago’s 121 walks this season rank second in the N.L. and third in the majors (4.7 per game) … last year, the Cubs were tied for 25th in the majors with 500 free passes (3.1 per game)

Chicago has had at least one plate appearance with the bases loaded in 10 consecutive games for the first time since June 7-17, 1979 (also a 10-game streak) … the previous major league club to accomplish the feat was last season’s Colorado Rockies squad (September 9-18) … thanks to Elias Sports Bureau for research assistance.

The club has had 45 plate appearances with the sacks packed this season, second-most in the majors (Oakland leads with 52) … Chicago is batting .324 (12-for-37) with a homer, five walks and 39 RBI with the bases loaded.

Owners of the second-best record in the majors (16-10/.615) behind only the Arizona Diamondbacks (19-8/.704) … despite going 1-4 in their last five, the Cubs have won seven of their last 11 games, 10 of their last 15 and 16 of their last 24 after starting the season with a pair of losses.

The Cubs are off to their best start since posting a 16-10 record in 2001 … in fact, the Cubs have now started 16-10 (or better) for just the sixth time in more than 70 years (2001, 1995, 1985, 1975, 1969) … the Cubs have not started a season 17-10 since 1995.
The Cubs are 16-10 this year after posting a 12-14 mark through 26 games in 2007 (13-14 through 27).

Last night, Derrek Lee tied the franchise record with his eighth home run in April, last done by Sammy Sosa in 2000 and 2002 … Lee Walls also accomplished the feat in 1958.

The first baseman’s eight home runs rank tied for second in the majors … last season, he didn’t’ hit his eighth home run until July 17 (his 87th game of the season).
Lee, who hit seven home runs in April 2005, has 45 career homers in March/April, tied for his most in any month with July and September/October.

SUMMARIZING THE MONTH: With 16 wins in April, the Cubs have matched their most wins in this calendar month in franchise history … Chicago previously posted a franchise-best 16 wins just once in April of 1969 … before 2008, the Cubs had previously won at least 15 games in April just three times: 2003, 2001 and 1969.

Geovany Soto has 14 RBI this month to become the second Cub rookie since 1956 to drive in at least 14 runs in March/April … Hee-Seop Choi had 14 RBI in the first month of 2003.
Including a five-game winning streak from April 5-10 and a six-game run from April 18-23, the Cubs posted a pair of five-game winning streaks (or more) within the month of April for the first time in the franchise’s 133-season history.

HOME COOKING: The Cubs are 10-5 at Wrigley Field this season, and have won five of six and nine of their last 11 at the Friendly Confines … Chicago’s .667 home winning percentage ranks tied for third in the N.L. and tied for fifth in the majors.

Chicago is hitting .306 (159-for-520) at Wrigley Field compared to a .249 average (103-for-413) on the road … the .306 home average ranks fourth in baseball – the Dodgers are first with a .308 average.
