Marmol....Next Closer?

I'm not suggesting that the Cubs will dump Dempster (unless he really struggles) but their has been talk of grooming a new young closer. First it was Guzman but he got injured, but Marmol has been healthy and IMPRESSIVE. If you haven't seen his numbers they are IMPRESSIVE. So if Dempster slips up I wouldn't see a problem in moving Marmol into the role. The bullpen is the best thing that's happened to his career so far.

Marmol looks like a different pitcher from last year...I guess the biggest difference is he is not afraid to throw a strike! If you look back to last year and compare this year's performances of the guys who have gone back to Iowa for a bit and return to the show this year, someone's doing something right in Iowa! Kudos to the coaching staff in Iowa. It wasn't too long ago that people were saying that the Cubs minor league farm system sucked, but jeez... we got Marmol, Pie, Theriot, and Fontenot to prove them wrong.

I think one reason Marmol looks so good is that he is not having to pace himself like he would if we was a starter. He can go all out because he knows he is only going to throw up to 30 or so pitches.

As far as Demps goes, I think he has been a bright spot for our club this year. If you look at his numbers- he only blown 2 saves. The problem is the 2 games he blew Mets and Atlanta they scored a ton of runs on him those games which puts his ERA in the mid 3s. I think it would be a mistake right now to make Marmol the closer, setup man sure. Right now he has been used kind of in long relief and he has looked electric. He probably has the best stuff of anyone in the pen. I always said the same about Lidge and Dotel- that they had better stuff than Wagner when all were with the Astros. As they both have found out- it is a lot harder getting outs 25, 26, and 27- than itis 20-25.

Marmol does have some great stuff. Whether he's best as a starter, long reliever, set-up man or closer, time will tell. He's got that blazing fastball and that slider that's so electric, they should've named a 70s dance after it.

I actually did not think he had his best going today. I thought Bowen called a few too many sliders. What a job by the pen though- Marmol, Ohman, and Howry.

Marquis needs to go to the pen before he completely self destructs like last year.Marmol as a starter would be more likely.
