Soto Up, Pie Down

I just read on cubs.com that Geovany Soto has been called up from Triple A Iowa, and Pie was sent down to get more playing time. So, apparently we'll start the second half will 11 pitchers and 3 catchers on the roster. Soto will be catching Z tomorrow against the Astros.

I don't think this is a good idea. Soto is a good catcher, and I think he deserves a shot right now. On the other hand, Bowen has done pretty much nothing at the plate. I guess this is what happens when a GM makes a one sided trade. Hendry should have pulled in a better player in return for Barrett.

I agree but at the same time is this due to possibly another trade being completed in the next few days? Thats the only reasonable explanation I see for them bringing up another Catcher.

Soto's a good catcher. It might be a trial for him to see how he calls the game and depending how he produces could mean Hill back down.

I would hope that any kind of trade would involve dumping either or both Bowen and Hill.

Yeah, but the deal is done, and Hendry didn't. So is that a good reason NOT to bring up Soto? I don't think so. We need better defense at the position (someone who doesn't throw the ball into center field when someone tries to steal second), and we DEFINITELY need some RH batting punch. This makes all the sense in the world to me, especially at this point in the season, when it's still not too late to tinker a bit.

I do not see the benefit of having 3 catchers, when not a single one of them has much offense.
