Mets get Santana?

Johan Santana-S-Twins Jan. 29 - 4:29 pm et

USA Today believes the Mets have landed Johan Santana from the Twins for Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Kevin Mulvey and Philip Humber.

A contract extension would still have to be worked out, so even if it is officially agreed to, this will likely linger through Friday at least. It's a pretty disappointing day for Twins fans. Both packages being discussed by the Red Sox and Yankees during the winter meetings seemed more attractive to us. Gomez and Guerra are big-time talents, but Gomez lacks plate discipline and might not fit in the top half of the lineup and an awful lot could go wrong before Guerra even sniff the majors. Mulvey and Humber are third starters at best and probably more like fourths. It's a whole lot better than losing Santana for draft picks next winter, but we'd have taken a Phil Hughes or Jacoby Ellsbury package over this.

Santana is going to get a MASSIVE contract. I don't fault Hendry one bit for not going after him. I am just shocked the Twins took a bad trade.

I don't think the Trade was that bad. I feel Elsbury is very over-rated

Going to the NL probably played a bigger role. Taking a slightly less inferior package to get him out of the AL might have been worth it in the Twins Eyes.

And let's face it, the MEts are the best chance they had of dealing him to the NL.

But they sold the farm to get him.... what happens if they have an injury thick year like they did last year? They may have a big named team, but for the most part, they are an "old" team (for baseball players)....

BIG smack in the face to Cashman and the Yankees though.... they thought for sure they were the next home for Santana! Couldn't buy this one, Steinbrenner!!!!! He's going across town!

Gotta take chances to win. If they have him for 6-7 years they'll be able to build around him when Alou/Pedro, etc are gone.

Their core is relatively young and good: Reyes, Wright, Maine, and now Santana.

FYI, Santana had some elbow troubles LY. It's a risk, but for the best pitcher in MLB, it's a good risk.
