Today in Cubs History: April 12

Today marked the 92nd consectuive errorless games for Ryne Sandberg. One of the balls from this game is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Phillip K. Wrigley, owner of the Chicago Cubs, dies at the age of 82. He had just started his 42nd season with the Cubs. William Wrigley succeeds his father as chairman of the executive committee of the team.

On opening day in Chicago, the Cards hand Bob Gibson a 5-run lead in the 1st inning against Larry Jackson. But the wind is blowing out and the game ends after 11 innings called because of darkness. The standoff is 10–10. For the Cubs, Roberto Pena makes three errors in seven chances but is 3-for-6 with home run and double. Ernie Banks hits the only other home run.

Chuck Essegian's 11th-inning pinch-hit home run beats the Cubs, 3–2, before a record Opening Day crowd (67,550) at Los Angeles. The home run is Essegian's 3rd straight as a pinch hitter, including two in the 1959 World Series. Don Drysdale pitches all the way, striking out 14, for the win over Bob Elston.

» The Tinker-Evers-Chance double play combination (with Ed Lennox at 3B) plays its final ML game together, a 3–2 loss in Cincinnati. Vic Saier will replace Chance at 1B.
Baseball season's underway...
So you'd better get ready for a brand new day

Big day... RIP Phil Wrigley... You weren't a baseball guy, but you did run the3 team for 42 years to uphold your fathers wishes.

1912 ended Tinker-Evers-Chance. I'm reading a book now called "Crazy '08" by Cait Murphy, and it's a detailed account of the 1908 season and the Cubs, Giants, & Pirates. It really gives a good feel about the time, and the city of Chicago back in the early 1900's... Excellent book, I reccomend to all.
