Shark to Iowa, Hill to Mesa

According to the Iowa and Cubs websites

You really have to wonder if Hill has any trade value at this point, he's pretty close to his Arb years.

interesting stuff...

the reason Shark got promoted: "His last five outings have been real good," Cubs player development director Oneri Fleita said.

In those five games, Samardzija has given up eight earned runs over 27 1/3 innings on 16 hits and 10 walks while striking out 16.

Hill to mesa because: The Iowa team is a little shorthanded with Sean Marshall set to be promoted on Tuesday to replace Carlos Zambrano in the Cubs' rotation, and Hill being sent to Mesa, Ariz., for some extra tutoring.

Hill will work with Minor League pitching coach Rick Tronerud and pitching coordinator Mark Riggins. The left-hander, who opened the year in the Cubs' rotation but struggled to a 1-0 record and 4.12 ERA in five starts, was 2-4 with a 5.88 ERA in seven games at Iowa. In his last start against New Orleans, he gave up six runs on three hits and four walks and couldn't finish the first inning. He has walked 28 and given up 22 hits in 26 innings at Iowa.

also on Felix Pie: Pie, who was batting .222 in 36 games at Iowa, also was headed to Mesa, Ariz., to undergo an MRI on his left hand, and will rehab there. Fleita said Pie either jammed his hand or injured it on an awkward swing and has been playing in pain for a few games.

When I saw the word "Shark," I was wondering, "Who is this 'Shark' fellow? Did we pick him up in some trade?" But then when I saw Samardzija mentioned, that's when I put two and two together.

The Cubs drafted a guy this year in the 20-something round name Rebel Riedling, and he is currently Boise's 1b.

I think this is too early for Samardzija and I'm not really sure why they are doing it. His move to Tenn worked out well and I do think he needed the competition there, but looking at his year so far I don't think he's AAA ready. At least not as ready as Veal. Unless they are looking to turn Samardzija into a reliever (which will stink, but isn't a bad idea), it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

However, I'm not a professional baseball scouting director, so what do I really know.

Good luck Shark (stop listening to horrible music and publicizing it on your blog)

It makes mores sense if you look at his contract. He has to be on the 25-man by the end of next season, they are fast-tracking him as much as is possible. For a guy that 'touches' 96 he has a low number of strikeouts.

Turning him into a reliever would be a collosal waste of resources, $8 million for a 5th round reliever??

The 2006 draft is turning into a real stinker. Should have put the Samardzija money in picking a better first-round player than Colvin.
