If someone has to go to the DL, he has to be out at least 15 days. If Carpenter has to be disabled from an injury sustained on Monday, then they can retroact the DL stint to then. However, he could be reactivated just in time for the Cubs series in Chicago.

There have been quite a few players on the DL to start the season this year. Other than Wood, it's good to see the Cubs aren't having that problem (knock on Wood ).

Carpenter suffers setback with elbow

Chris Carpenter had swelling his elbow on Sunday morning after throwing Saturday and won't start Tuesday as hoped.
The Cardinals will finally send Carpenter for an MRI, something they should have done in the first place. Carpenter's elbow felt fine after his bullpen session Saturday, but the swelling suggests there's something more than just inflamation going on in there. It's possible that Blake Hawksworth will be called up to start in Carpenter's place on Tuesday. Apr. 8 - 3:58 pm et

I just read that, Webgem, and it sounds as if they may have no choice but to put him on the DL and make it retroactive back to the last day pitched. He is taking up a spot on the roster on a team that is struggling out of the gate. Gotta respect Karma!

When your elbow swells up like he says it is, it can't be good. I'm suspecting TJ surgery in the future.

I don't even think he threw a full bullpen session, did he? He threw off flat ground, not even off a mound. So, no, it doesn't look really well for Carpenter or the Cardinals. They have a real reason to be sweating a little right now as they didn't have much of a rotation to begin with, pretty much relying on Carpenter to carry the load. It's too bad for Carpenter, but I'm not going to complain!

I think it was a full bullpen session. The St Louis Dispatch mentioned he threw in the outfield on Friday, felt good, and the session Saturday.

According to STL reports, he's going on the 15-DL retroactive April 2nd.

So, if he can avoid TJ, and his elbow is well enough to go by April 17, he might be able to appear in the Cubs series at Wrigley.

I don't think he'll be back this month from reading this:

Chris Carpenter, SP STL

News: Chris Carpenter was placed on the 15-day DL on Monday after an MRI exam in St. Louis revealed arthritis and a previously undiscovered impingement in his right elbow. Carpenter, limited to one start this season, will rest for the next 10 days to two weeks and will be re-examined after that. The condition sometimes requires surgery but also can be cured by rest and treatment. With Carpenter unable to make his previously scheduled start Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, left-hander Randy Keisler was called up from Triple-A Memphis to pitch.

Analysis: According to a statement issued by the team, there was no evidence of an acute ligament injury -- a problem that would have required surgery and likely would have finished Carpenter's season. An impingement occurs when a thin layer of membrane that lines the elbow becomes caught in the elbow joint. The problem is relatively common among athletes who have a repetitive elbow motion, such as throwing a pitch or swinging a golf club. Arthroscopic surgery can repair the usually painful injury if initial treatment is not successful. Consider your Fantasy ace out for at least two weeks and likely until May at this point.
