3/1 CHC@SDP recap

at Peoria, Ariz.

Sunday, March 1

Padres at the plate: Chase Headley got his first two hits of the spring and drove in a run. Will Venable also had two hits, including an RBI double in the Padres' two-run first inning. Travis Denker, who is trying to win a job as a backup infielder, had a hit in three at-bats and drove in a run.

Cubs at the plate: Leadoff hitter Ryan Theriot had two hits in three at-bats, including the only hit the Cubs had in three innings off Jake Peavy. Third baseman Mike Fontenot had two hits, both doubles, and scored a run.

Padres on the mound: Peavy, in his final Cactus League start before the World Baseball Classic, retired eight straight batters following his lone hit allowed. Wade LeBlanc followed with a scoreless fourth inning but allowed two runs in the fifth. Justin Hampson, Arturo Lopez and Greg Burke each tossed a scoreless frame down the stretch.

Cubs on the mound: Starting pitcher Ryan Dempster was hurt by some shoddy defense in his two innings. He allowed three unearned runs on two hits. He struck out one and walked one. Chad Fox, Mike Stanton, Rocky Roquet and Kevin Hart each looked sharp in tossing a scoreless frame.

Cactus League records: Cubs 4-1; Padres 1-1-2

Up next: Carlos Zambrano will make his first Cactus League start on Monday at 2:05 p.m. CT when the Cubs play host to the D-backs at HoHoKam Park. Carlos Marmol, on the other hand, will make his last appearance before heading to Florida to join the Dominican Republic team for the World Baseball Classic. Expect Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez back in the lineup for the Cubs.

Josh Geer, who had a nice run during September after being recalled from Triple-A Portland, gets the start for the Padres at 2:05 p.m. CT on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers in Peoria. Geer, one of many candidates for a job in the back end of the rotation, is scheduled to throw two innings. Mat Latos, who allowed two home runs on Friday in Goodyear, Ariz., is scheduled to throw one inning.
Baseball season's underway...
So you'd better get ready for a brand new day
