3/2 ARI@CHC recap

at Mesa, Ariz.
Monday, March 2

D-backs at the plate: Chad Tracy hit an RBI single, Tony Clark hit a two-run double, and Chris Snyder followed with a three-run homer in a five-run fourth inning in front of 9,605 at HoHoKam Park.

Cubs at the plate: Koyie Hill notched the first hit off Arizona pitching when he singled with two outs in the fifth. Andres Blanco hit an RBI double with one out in the ninth. The Cubs had more defensive highlights than hits as Joey Gathright made a diving grab in the third and Mike Fontenot threw out a runner at the plate in the seventh.

D-backs on the mound: Dan Haren threw two hitless innings, striking out two and walking one. Juan Gutierrez and Hector Ambriz each threw two shutout innings.

Cubs on the mound: Carlos Zambrano, making his first Cactus League start, struck out three of the six batters he faced in his two innings. Carlos Marmol tuned up for the World Baseball Classic by striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Cactus League records: D-backs 4-2; Cubs 4-2.

Up next: The D-backs travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., on Tuesday to face the Giants. It will be Arizona's first look at Randy Johnson in a Giants uniform. The Big Unit pitched for the D-backs from 1999-2004 and 2007-08 before departing as a free agent in the offseason. Doug Davis will start for Arizona.

The Cubs will host the Oakland Athletics at HoHoKam Park, sending lefty Sean Marshall against former Chicago pitcher Sean Gallagher. This will be Marshall's second outing this spring. He's vying for the fifth starter spot in the rotation. Also scheduled to pitch is Andrew Cashner, the Cubs' No. 1 Draft pick from 2008.
Baseball season's underway...
So you'd better get ready for a brand new day
