3/4 CHC@CLV recap (game one of split sqad)
INDIANS 5, CUBS 4
at Goodyear, Ariz.
Wednesday, March 4
Cubs at the plate: The Cubs got right to work on right-hander Carl Pavano in the first inning. They loaded the bases for former Tribe prospect Brad Snyder, who ripped a two-run single up the middle. In the second, Nate Spears tripled and later scored on a fielder's choice. James Adduci had an RBI single off the bench in the sixth inning. Milton Bradley went 1-for-3 with a double.
Indians at the plate: The Tribe showed some middle-of-the-order thump against Chad Gaudin in the first, as Victor Martinez doubled home one run and Beau Mills cranked out a two-run shot -- his first homer of the spring. In the fourth, one prospect acquired in the CC Sabathia trade, Michael Brantley, drove in another, Matt LaPorta, with an RBI single.
Cubs on the mound: Gaudin labored in the first and then settled down. He went three innings, giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Edward Campusano gave up one run on one hit and a walk in his lone inning of work.
Indians on the mound: Pavano's second start of the spring was nowhere near as effective as the first. He allowed three runs on four hits, walking one batter and hitting another. Fausto Carmona worked two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk. Left-hander Scott Lewis, in the mix for the last rotation spot, gave up a run on four hits in two innings.
Cactus League records: Cubs 5-2; Indians 2-4-1
Up next: The Cubs play the White Sox in Las Vegas on Thursday. The newly acquired Aaron Heilman, hoping to be in the mix for the fifth-starter spot, is scheduled to start for the Cubs.
After Thursday's off-day, the Indians are expected to have two prominent players making their spring debuts Friday against the Brewers. Reigning Cy Young winner Cliff Lee will make his first start of the spring, and designated hitter Travis Hafner will get a couple at-bats as the next big step in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery.
