I disagree with those in the sabermetric community who insist that wins don't matter. While wins shouldn't be the only barometer to judge how effective a pitcher is performing, like all statistics, it remains a cog in the grander appraisal.
A far too overlooked factor in Samardzija's win total: arbitration. When the off-season concludes, the formula for a player's arbitration hearing includes wins. So Samardzija's lack of wins is costing him money, despite how well he's actually pitching.
