Cubs interested in Orlando Hudson

Orlando Hudson, 2B, free agent: It's amazing that a player of this caliber remains unsigned, but lining up are the Cubs, White Sox, and Dodgers. A few Cubs organizational people really want Hudson, but the impending transfer of ownership from the Chicago Tribune to Tom Ricketts may hinder GM Jim Hendry's ability to do anything until it's complete.

oh I get it he's a switch-hitter, the greatest thing you can be as a baseball player. Not only that he plays 2b.

Actually, I would love to have him, but as a SS.

He would be a nice addition to the infield, but signing him would mean that Fontenot loses his starting spot again? switch hitting is more valuable than not in my opinion. and we need bench infielders which are slim right now.

If the Cubs are going to work Fontenot in at SS this spring training, then the signing could make a lot of sense. If he comes cheaply enough, given the market, it's a move worth making, even if it mucks up the bench a little.

I really don't see them making any more moves before ST.

I hope they jump on this guy I have always liked his game. To me the biggest part of baseball is defense and this guy is a stud. His range is one of the best in baseball and I can see him signing a 1 year deal to wait until next year for the market to pick back up.
I like Font but Hudson playing second would be a huge upgrade and make the pitchers beg everything get hit to their left.

Why would the cubs move the more limited defender to SS??? I know Miles and Fontenot are both going to get time at SS in ST, but didn't they try that last year too??

In anycase it doesn't seem like the O-Dog thing is going to happen.

considering that some of the biggest heartbreaks in CUBS playoff history are infelders making errors (DURHAM, GONZO, DeRo and Lee and in that nightamre inning in game 2 last year.....)

you can pick up a 3 time gold glover on the cheap now... why not?

unfortuantely (or hopefully fortunately) they already opted for the cheaper Aaron Miles to play 2B after they traded DeRosa.

if Hudson was a better base stealer - he'd have been a top target.
but too many SO, not enough BB and some injury questions for a guy in the 5+mil range.
