Jason Marquis to the Rockies for Luis Vizcaino.

ESPN's Steve Phillips is reporting that the Cubs are close to sending Jason Marquis to the Rockies for Luis Vizcaino.

Some cash almost certainly would be involved as well. This is a lot more about the Cubs wanting to dump Marquis than it is any desire for Vizcaino. With an open rotation spot, they could well enter the mix for Derek Lowe or Randy Wolf. It seems unlikely that the Jake Peavy talks will be revisited. Dec.

Marquis For Vizcaino Trade Close
By Tim Dierkes [December 30 at 4:44pm CST]
According to ESPN's Steve Phillips, the Cubs and Rockies are close to a swap of starter Jason Marquis for reliever Luis Vizcaino (saw it scroll across the screen on ESPN2). Marquis is set to earn $9.875MM in '09, while Vizcaino will make $3.5MM plus a $4MM option for 2010 with a $500K buyout.

Marquis, 30, tossed 167 innings of 4.53 ball in 2008. He did roughly the same in '07. Vizcaino, 34, posted a 5.28 ERA in 46 innings. He dealt with a strained shoulder and later expressed concerns that he didn't pitch enough. His velocity was up from '07 and he whiffed more than a batter per inning, but he was done in by walks and home runs. Vizcaino added a DUI to his resume in October.

Cubs may deal Marquis for Vizcaino
Starter to earn nearly $10 million in '09; reliever owed $3.5 million
By Tom Singer / MLB.com

The Cubs are nearing their offseason objective to shed Jason Marquis and his salary, being on the verge of dealing the right-hander to the Rockies for righty reliever Luis Vizcaino, according to a report by ESPN.
Marquis, who is due to earn $9,875,000 in 2009, had been perceived as one of the obstacles to the Cubs' earlier interest in acquiring San Diego right-hander Jake Peavy -- a proposed deal subsequently termed "dead" by both parties.

Vizcaino, whose 2009 salary calls for $3.5 million, appeared in 43 games for the Rockies last season. The 34-year-old righty has a 2010 option at $4 million, with a $500,000 buyout.

Marquis, 30, has been a consisted winner despite posting escalating ERAs, including 4.53 last season while he went 11-9 in 28 starts. In the past five seasons, the first three of which he spent with the Cardinals, Marquis has won 65 games, posting a sub-4.13 ERA only once.

6:20PM: This story has been confirmed by Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

While the deal likely won't be official until next week, it looks like the Cubs will be paying $1MM of Marquis' salary in 2009. That makes a net reduction of roughly $5MM in payroll for the Cubs

Not sure I like this one, either...

Kevin Gregg, Luis Vizcaino, lets face it, our bullpen is going to be a weakness next season. But i'm guessing this move is necessary in order to free up money to sign Milton Bradley. What a sub par off-season!

Man, I don't like this move at all! I thought Hendry was trying to target a LEFTY in the pen? I understand there is a logjam in the rotation, but jeez.... ho hum. Agreed, Bims, very sub-par offseason! There's still time, but PLEASE Mr. Hendry...give us SOMETHING to get a bit excited over rather than more and more apprehensive every day.

You bring up a good point. Who's our trustworthy lefty out of the pen next season? With this trade going down, Marshall will most likely be in the rotation. Do we trust Cotts enough to be the main lefty out of the pen? Besides Cotts, who else is there? Rich Hill doesn't look like he's ready for a big league mound anytime soon.
