AT A LOSS:

The Chicago Cubs last night began their season-long 10-day, nine-game, three-city road trip with a 10-2 loss at Cincinnati to extend their losing streak to a season-high six games
… after tomorrow’s series finale and Monday’s day off, the Cubs continue their trek with three games in St. Louis next Tuesday-Thursday and three games in Houston next weekend.

Chicago’s six-game losing streak is its longest drought since May 27-June 2, 2007, also a six-game skid … the Cubs tonight look to avoid losing a seventh game in a row for the first time since 2006, when they dropped eight in a row from May 2-9.

Despite last night’s loss, the Cubs have won 13 of their last 15 games on the road to improve to 34-32 away from the Friendly Confines this season … prior to this stretch, the Cubs were 21-30 in their first 51 road games this season.

THE LOW DOWN ON THE DOWN O: Since erupting for 12 and 14 runs, respectively, on back-to-back days August 25 and 26 in Pittsburgh, the Cubs have scored three runs or less in seven of their last nine games, including two runs or less five times.

The Cubs are batting .228 (31-for-136) in their four September contests, having been shut out twice and limited to just two runs last night.
By the same token, Cubs pitchers have turned in a 4.50 ERA (41 ER/82.0 IP) in the last nine games, including a 6.32 ERA (26 ER/37.0 IP) in their four September contests.

IN GOOD STANDING: Nevertheless, the Cubs enter the day with a 4.0 game edge in the National League Central with 21 games to play, the second-largest lead of any club in the majors entering the day (the Angels lead the A.L. West by 17 games.)

The Cubs have had sole possession of first place in the National League Central every day for the last 103 except when they held a first-place tie with the Milwaukee Brewers entering play July 27 … the Cubs have had sole possession or been in a tie for first place for the last 16-plus weeks (118 days) starting May 11.

The Cubs entered September with a 4.5-game cushion ahead of Milwaukee in the National League Central, their largest lead entering the final month of the season since pacing the National League East by 5.5 games ahead of the New York Mets heading into the final month of the 1984 campaign.

Despite dropping their first four games of September for the first time since 2000 (when they lost their first five games of this month), the Cubs have only lost half-a-game off their lead in the division since the start of the month.

QUALITY FOES, PRIMARILY ROAD: Chicago rounds out its 2008 schedule with 15 of its last 21 games on the road … 19 of those 21 games are against clubs currently with winning records.

LOOKING FOR A 10-SPOT: Tonight’s Cubs starter Jason Marquis looks to pick up his 10th win of the season to become the fourth Cubs pitcher to reach double digits in victories in 2008.

Ted Lilly boasts 13 wins this season, joining teammates Ryan Dempster (15 wins) and Carlos Zambrano (13 wins) at the mark this season … the Cubs are the only team in baseball with three pitchers with 13 or more wins this season.

A BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURE: The Cubs have been remarkably similar when comparing team numbers Before and After the All-Star Break this season.

BEFORE THE BREAK 2008 CUBS AFTER THE BREAK

Lou says "if these guys want to stay in the lineups, swing the bats."

He says the next 21 days he will play the lineups that can hit the ball and win games.

Gaudin is out all weekend...actually heading back to Chicago for tests on his back.

Ted Lilly, since he went such a short outing, he may go Wednesday which would push Harden back one more day.

Milwaukee and SanDiego are just getting underway in Milwaukee. I will update their games throughout our game as well

Out West... LA has a 7-2 lead in the 9th inning, so it looks as if the Dodgers will take a .5 game lead over the Snakes for the Western Division.

I like the fact that Marquis can be effective with his sinker in the Great American Ballpark.
