Just how good are we??

Its the midpoint and we have won 49 games. If we duplicate that it will be 98 wins. That looks great. If healthy, I think we will be alright. Edmonds is becoming a huge part of our team- I just dont know how long he can hold up. Dempster has been a stalwart to our staff, but he hasnt thrown this much since 2001. We are also relying heavily on a 22 year old in Gallagher, not to mention the rollercoaster ride with Marquis. Bullpen wise- everything looks good except Eyres injury and Marmol. Marmol is so important and I think we can all understand 1 even 2 bad outings in a row, but 4 out of his last 5 have been shaky. Offensively- we are solid up and down- I do worry about Soto wearing down though.

With that being said we have played a very weak schedule so far. We have basically beaten up on the Pirates and the West. All wins count the same, I know that, but our interleague record is 6-8 going into today. The AL has killed the NL this year. Now we have played some pretty decent AL teams, but I expected at least a 9-6, even 10-5 mark vs. them.

The second half will be littered with our own division and the East. Hopefully we can add a pitcher and get goign again. As much as it looks like we are missing Soriano, I really dont think thats the biggest thing. We are still hitting and scoring. I think Marmol is the key to our success. If he is his normal self, you can add 2 more wins to our total.

Maybe Im panicking a little. I dont just want to get to the playoffs. I want them to win it all, as Im sure everyone does. I think our team now can get there, but I dont think it can win the World Series unless we are scorching at that time.

This team will need to get hot again before the end of the year, thats for sure. Hopefully hot going into the playoffs.

As for how good we are right now, i think we are treading water to stay in first in our division. Another sub par couple of weeks and we could find ourselves in 2nd or 3rd place.

Hopefully this team will be back to full strength shortly following the break. Then maybe they can go on a tear.

Yes that is, especially the injury part. We cant whine to the Cards about ours because they have had more than their fair share. I have heard 5 different analysts this weekend picking the Cubs to go to the World Series. I just hope we arent reading our press clippings too much.

The problem in previous years is exactly what might happen this year... hot to start the season, cool down, medicore through the rest of the season, and then that's how they go into the playoffs. In '03, they made the push behind strong starting pitching, and this year they're doing it with the long ball... they're going to need to get smarter on the basepath, and more solid in the rotation... if Marshall can prove to be a guy they can depend on, then we're looking at something here, because I don't see Gallagher being the guy... I really wish that Hill could put it together, because even with all the comparisons between him and Marshall, he's simply just a better pitcher. They will need to make a trade to get a spark on this team, and they'll need to have everyone running on all cylinders. Zambrano's got to calm down, Lee's got to be more patient, as does Aramis, and we need guys like Cedeno and Fontenot to provide some speed... if Soriano can get back and stay healthy, he has the definite potential to be a WS MVP. He can run and he can hit... he will need to be the anchor of this team, along with Z, and they have a real chance to blow away some opponents in the playoffs. Their biggest challenge will be the AL if they play they way they're capable.

I think the last three series have been a reality check for me..... nothing is a guarantee. I was so "high" on the good times, it didn't seem as if there could possibly be bad times. Okay, baseball gods, I get it. I understand not to take anything for granted.... now GET OUR BOYS BACK ON TRACK ALREADY, PLEASE!?! My heart really hurts right now and my frustration level feels like a bad case of road rage!
